Keeping Your Gadgets Safe While Traveling

Keeping Your Gadgets Safe While Traveling

As a full-time traveler who works online, I always have expensive gadgets with me, and keeping it safe is quite tricky especially since I usually stay in dorm hostels. I’m lucky enough if the hostel offer lockers that I can double lock with my own padlock. But with or without lockers, I usually always make sure to have my gadgets with me, even going to the toilet!

When I am working in a coffee shop, I usually observed some coffee goers who are in the coffee shop to do some works on their laptop leave there MacBook (laptop) when going to the toilet. I always worry about them. Because even though it’s Starbucks, we still don’t know what will happen in just a blink of an eye. That’s why it’s advisable to have your gadgets with you even if you’re sitting next to the toilet. Haha!

I do worry about keeping all of my gadgets safe from thieves and prying eyes. And I am more cautious with my MacBook since it’s my most expensive gadget with me and I can’t do my works without it. Below are the tips that will help you keep your gadgets safe while on the road.

HOW I KEEP MY GADGETS SAFE

(while traveling)

1 LABEL EVERYTHING

Label everything. Invest in some labels or have a personalize labels or tags that will be your sign that the certain thing is yours. Label not only the big size gadgets like your laptop and camera but also your chargers, cords, and adopters.

Before I left home to travel indefinitely, I printed my name and this blog name, Solitary Travels, on a sticker paper. I used it to label all my gadgets, adapters, cords and even my pouches, passport holder, laptop bag, and camera bag.

2 USE THE HOTEL ROOM SAFE

If you’re staying in a hotel, most hotels have a safe in the room. Put all the valuable items that you do not want to take with you while you’re having a tour of your destination. Just make sure that you’ll leave it securely locked.

If you’re staying in a hostel, most hotels have lockers available. Always have an extra padlock with you to double-lock your locker. I feel safer to double lock my lockers or using my own padlock than using the hostel’s own padlock.

3 KEEP YOUR VALUABLES IN YOUR CARRY-ON BAG OR DAY BAG

At the airport, never put expensive gadgets in your luggage. You might need it or the worst, you might lose it in your checked-in luggage. To be safe, keep all your valuables in your carry-on bag.

At your destination and you’re going on a tour, have a day bag and keep your gadgets with you. If you’re working in a coffee shop alone and you need to use the toilet, asked the person beside your table to look out for your things. But it’s always good and safer to just bring your gadget with you even when you’ll be using the toilet.

4 DO WORRY ABOUT IDENTITY THEFT

Browse the internet with cautions. Be aware of the fact that you might be using a public network. Thus, accessing your bank accounts or any sites that has your personal and sensitive information is not advisable. Or you can install your bank’s mobile app on your smartphone and access your account from there instead.

INSIDER TIP: Use TunnelBear VPN to protect your information when browsing on the internet. It provides you with a secure and private connection to a less restricted internet. Download TunnelBear VPN here.

5 DO MONITOR YOUR ACCOUNTS

When traveling, always make sure to monitor your accounts. Although I told you above to not access your bank accounts on public networks, you should still monitor them. And consider signing up on Identity Guard if you do not have one yet. Make sure your cards stay in your hands and monitor iffy activities.

If you notice that something is off in your email or social media accounts, change your password right away. Some social media accounts will let you have an option to log out on all devices, please do it so. Also, make sure to use two-way verifications on your email or social media accounts. Yes, I understand that in some ways this can be a hassle (i feel you) but it’s also an assurance and safety to your accounts.
